Beach Themed Cake Smash

The Luong Family held Sebastian’s beach themed cake smash / one year old family session at Dunes Beach in Half Moon Bay, thinking a location farther from San Francisco would prove to be more sunny to compliment their surf and beach themed photoshoot! I photographed Sara and Tat’s Maternity Shoot at Land’s End about a year ago, so I was excited to help document another important part of their lives together. Sara previously sent me a bunch of sample décor photos showing an interest in a surf and beach themed photo shoot, going all out buying appropriate props and completing the set up with her own surfboard. It was a gorgeous sunset at the beach and the more unknown Half Moon Bay beach allowed us to avoid big crowds and to enjoy the scenery mostly all to ourselves. It is always nice when families coordinate clothing, and the Luong Family dressed up in perfect attire for the shoot depicting California beach weather. Sebastian was his typical happy self, smiling and giggling as the balloons waved in the air and also tracking his mom’s enthusiastic attention-grabbing motions behind the camera. Tat and Sara are one of my closest friends and it is always an honor to document their life events, being able to witness the ups and downs and “riding the waves” of parenthood along with them.  Cake smashes are 50 / 50 as to whether the kid will even touch the cake, but fortunately Sebastian is a very curious child and from his enthusiasm, tearing into the cake proved he enjoys making a mess! This beach themed cake smash was the perfect mixture of their personalities and it was great seeing Sebastian’s joy as his feet touched the sand. Congrats on year one down you guys! If these early days are any indication of whats to come, you guys are going to be just fine! Interested In More Information? Kennedy Grove Maternity Shoot

Ashley and Roy’s Kennedy Grove Park maternity and family shoot in El Sobrante was a wonderful celebration for their upcoming third daughter. Conveniently located a few minutes from their home, I started with portraits focusing on Ashley and her belly by herself, and then halfway through the rest of the family joined in the session. It is always nice getting away from the City for an outdoor shoot where the weather is a little more predictable. The pretty afternoon sun breathed life into their family photos as the back lighting helped add to Ashley’s pregnancy glow. And with a third girl on its way, the personalities of the two sisters definitely were on display for the entire shoot. 🙂 It is always fun to see the different personalities when it comes to sisters and brothers of various ages. This family shoot was no exception, as the oldest child was more reserved and timid, and the youngest was more out going. It will be interesting to see how the third daughter will be influenced by both personalities of her older sisters growing up – perhaps she will be a nice compliment of both of them? I guess we will soon find out! As you can tell from the natural laughs and loving dynamics of this family, regardless of what personality she has she will fit right in just fine. Thank you Ashley and Roy for allowing me to capture this great moment in your lives with this Kennedy Grove Maternity shoot! Redwood City Family Shoot

The newest member of the Ball Family arrived just in time for the Christmas holiday, and the entire clan wanted to do a Redwood City family shoot around downtown to give their family photos a more modern take (as well as be nearby). I first met the new mom, Alina, as a guest while I photographed Aravinda and Nevin’s wedding a several years ago at the Falkirk Cultural Center. Fast forward a couple of years later and she contacted me to photograph her Hamilton themed baby shower, complete with a Hamilton trivia game which she and her equally competitive sister dominated 🙂 From the very first time I met her at the wedding, Alina was always seen with a huge smile on her face, and meeting her family for the first time you can tell where she got her positivity from. The Ball Family members are such warm and welcoming individuals and made me feel like I was one of them. A parent of three daughters, Alina’s father knew his family well and was amusingly the total opposite of them, absolutely hating having his photo taken. Despite vocalizing his displeasure consistently after the first 10 mins and group photo, he gladly gave in to his daughters’ requests to taking more and more photos. The girls knew it is not every day they see each other, since they live all over the country, and wanted to take full advantage of this precious family time.  Living in Redwood City, they knew Downtown had photogenic areas, drawing attention to the fountains in the plaza which served as an ideal backdrop for their photos, while also providing seats for them to more comfortably get into family group poses. Seeing as this family shoot was taken the day after Christmas, I felt it was only fitting that we include a festive “Happy Holidays” acknowledgment in their photos before the Dad eventually got fed up with taking photos and walked away to conclude the Redwood City Family shoot 🙂 Interested In More Information? Golden Gate Park Maternity Shoot

Golden Gate Park Maternity Shoot Becca and Calvin preferred an outdoor setting in the park for their Golden Gate Park Maternity Shoot, deciding on the Dutch Windmills nearby their house. When people choose Golden Gate Park they typically go for Stow Lake or something more popular, so it was great being able to photograph at another location outside of the normal spots. Becca actually found me via Christine and Ryan’s Maternity Shoot photos posted on Facebook a couple of months prior, as Becca was a former middle school classmate of Christine’s. Referrals are always great and it is always an extra honor when I get them. We were fortunate to have a clear sky and gorgeous light for this Golden Gate Park maternity shoot, allowing us plenty of back light to highlight this beautiful family and wonderful smiles. Their eldest daughter was very excited and anxious to meet her new sister, and happily kissed and hugged her mother’s belly. This beautiful family definitely left an impression on me and I will always think of them when I visit this wonderful garden. The Dutch Windmills are not as common a location to shoot in for my Clients, which is surprising because the gardens are so well kept and the flowers add an extra pop of color and beauty to their images. It was all smiles for this lovely family of three, and I am so fortunate that they found me and honored me with their family maternity shoot. Update : Jason, from this Stern Grove Family Shoot, randomly saw this blog post and recognized his co-worker Calvin. It is a small world full of happy families apparently! Marin Art and Garden Center Family Shoot

Marin Art and Garden Center Family Shoot The Morell Family’s Marin and Art Garden Center family shoot in Ross, California, was held on a beautiful sunny day in typical North Bay weather. Believe it or not, this was their first family shoot ever! With two little girls, ages three and five, they obviously held off on taking family photos…but as I tell people…there is never a bad time to take family photos! In retrospect, Kristin never did maternity photos or had newborn photos either, so this being their first family shoot ever was a pretty big deal! And I definitely was honored that she chose me! 😀 With the daughters at more “photo friendly ages,” it made the process a lot easier for them as well, and the girls absolutely loved being in front of the camera! Looking like seasoned photoshoot parents, they even knew the secret technique of jelly bean bribery / rewards (depending on how you look at it haha). The Marin Art and Garden Center is a popular location for weddings and elopements, but is also a great park to walk around and photograph by itself with its wide variety of themed areas. Providing so many different backdrops for these family photos, it made the shoot a lot easier to go from one area to the next quickly (thus maintaining their attention without much walking around), and I think we did a pretty good job of getting a variety of looks in just an hour! One of my favorite sequences of the shoot involved the red leaves, and I loved that the color added to the floral dresses perfectly. It was an honor to help document this family for their first shoot together with this Marin and Art Garden Center family shoot, and I hope I made the experience for everyone involved a memorable one! This family is so photogenic and so happy, I am bewildered as to why it took them so long to document those smiles! Check this out if you’d like to see my Family portfolio. San Francisco Family Photographer - Stern Grove

Stern Grove Family Shoot

This Stern Grove family shoot will be my fourth year in a row with the Lincoln Family, as they get ready for their annual holiday Christmas card photo shoot. Stern Grove is the same place Ella Mei and Jason got married several years back, when Lily was less than a year old. Seeing them grow up behind the camera, it is always a pleasure to see the little girls grow in maturity and beauty, while maintaining their playful innocence and youth. Every time I see them the whole family is always in a great mood, despite what Ella Mei tells me what goes on at home 🙂 We started out the family session by focusing on the two girls, and their cute smiles foreshadowed what would happen the entire shoot. Soon after, the parents joined in for some memorable family photos on the same steps they took other family photos on their wedding day. As soon as we changed settings and went to the performance stage, Ella Mei pulled out some dried apricots, which was met with very big smiles. On the stage, in order to encourage more candid and natural responses, I suggested the parents pick up and twirl the girls around which always helps to teach little kids that the photo shoot is fun and not a forced chore. It’s all about positive reinforcement I guess! 🙂 This little sequence helped create the best images of the day in my opinion as it shows the best natural reactions from both the kids and the parents. Too often it seems in family shoots the parents are focused on getting the kids smiling, but I feel the best images of kids is of them laughing, naturally. After doing the yearly solo portraits of the girls, we finished the shoot on the steps of the Stern Grove building, the sight of their wedding reception. At the time, another interested wedding couple was inspecting the area for their big day, but were gracious enough to let us in and allow Jason and Ella Mei to show their kids this meaningful place, where they added another special memory with today’s Stern Grove family shoot.
