DeTurk Round Barn Wedding

DeTurk Round Barn Wedding Jenna and Eric stayed in their hometown of Santa Rosa for their DeTurk Round Barn wedding, first having their wedding ceremony at First United Methodist Church then going to a different location for their reception. Church ceremonies are always a little more difficult to photograph in since they are generally darker than most wedding venues, but fortunately at this particular church the stained glass windows provided soft lighting to capture the ceremony but are also a little more strict in terms of where photographers can walk. Fortunately, the First United Methodist Church is large enough for me to move around more discreetly and allowed me to move around more freely to focus on moments. As a country music fan, I loved the fact that Jenna and her bridesmaids were wearing leather boots and I was more than happy to capture the fun. Upon arriving for the DeTurk Round Barn wedding reception, we continued the group fun outside, allowing guests to enjoy the unique setting and décor of the venue. After some lovingly embarrassing speeches, Jenna and Erik shared their parent dances and you can see the pride and joy in their eyes as they danced with their respective children. It was touching to see Erik’s mom embrace him as they danced and him wearing his uniform only gave her more of a reason to be so pride of him. Once the music started the guests were eager to hit the dance floor and had so much energy. Surprisingly, amongst the mix of rap, country, and hip hop music, the most popular song that filled the dance floor was the dance crazy of the 90s – the Macarena! I specifically remember Jenna forcing a reluctant Erik to join her to dance this song, and the photo of her encouraging him on the dance floor is one of my favorites from the day. Congratulations Jenna and Erik! Thank you for allowing me to photograph your Deturk Round Barn wedding and for teaching me that the Macarena will be forever loved. Interested In More Information? University Club Palo Alto Wedding

University Club Palo Alto Wedding Udval and John held an American and Mongolian University Club Palo Alto wedding, bringing together two very different cultures and reflecting on their unique love story that originated in Mongolia several years ago. John traveled to Mongolia initially for Peace Corps and ended up extending his stay in Mongolia for 13 more years, first falling in love with the culture and people and then eventually this mesmerizing woman with the kindest of hearts. Having met Udval in her native country, they developed a love for each other that might have seemed improbable given their backgrounds and distance apart, and it was so great to see both families come together from opposite ends of the world for such a joyous occasion. When speaking to Udval about her wedding day, I was excited to hear that they would be incorporating both cultures into their wedding ceremony, having very little exposure to Mongolian culture, let alone a wedding, before. Udval explained to me that in Mongolian weddings, an important aspect of the Ceremony is the inclusion of a blue silk scarf called a hadag, which symbolizes well being and peace, and the lighting of a unity candle and offering of milk. A longer ceremony at around 30 minutes, the solemnity and traditions of this wedding made it one of the most memorable ceremonies I have ever witnessed, and I absolutely loved experiencing this melting pot of cultures and hope to shoot more in the future! Udval revealed to me that it was the first time her parents ever left Mongolia, so it was that much more important to document their reactions and presence throughout the day. For the wedding reception itself, it remained a typical American reception with some speeches and first dances, but it was touching surprise when all of their Mongolian friends and family stood up in front of everyone and sang a popular Mongolian song to the newly weds as they swayed left and right to the song with appreciation. It was a great celebration being exposed to such a wonderful culture and even better people. Being able to explore the world through my lens is one of the best advantages of being a wedding photographer, and the emotions and love felt throughout the day help remind me why I am blessed to do what I do. Anderson Hall Wedding

Anderson Hall Wedding Robert and Ricky had a slight change of plans for their Anderson Hall wedding, but that didn’t stop them having the best day ever! Anderson Hall, in Camp Meeker, is a hidden gem amongst the redwood trees and creeks in Sonoma County that add to the perfect setting for an outdoor wedding. Having an outdoor ceremony to take advantage of the gorgeous redwoods was the plan up until 2 hours before the Ceremony start time. Unfortunately, their wedding date coincided with one of the (few) bigger storms Northern California had had in years! The heavy rain made an outdoor ceremony uncomfortable so they instead had it done indoors at the reception hall, squeezing in amongst the dining tables and chairs. This setup, however tight, only made the gathering more intimate as the emotions of the moment quickly came over the Grooms almost immediately once they started…and all the worry of the weather quickly went away. Fortunately, the rain only lasted an hour at the start of the day, so the rest of the evening went as planned outdoors with dancing and many smiles. Family group portraits in the rain might be my new favorite thing to shoot, however! Going over images of grumpy kids with wet clothes and the adults embracing the wet weather with huge smiles made getting soaked photographing this Andersen Hall wedding totally worth it. La-Costanera-Wedding

La Costanera Wedding

La Costanera Wedding Michelle and Joseph held their La Costanera wedding in Montara, California, a popular Peruvian restaurant situated by the ocean that is well known amongst the locals for its food and easy beach access. In front of about 120 of their closest friends and family, they said their vows and I Do’s on an overcast day, surprising everyone who expected a sunny day that occurred just the day before around the same time. With an outdoor ceremony offering plenty of open sky, the weather provided a clean white backdrop and a blank canvas for their ceremony photos, allowing everyone to focus on the Bride and Groom and not be distracted by the beach and waves just out of sight. For photography, the even lighting is ideal for portraits, and it was for me a blessing in disguise. For the happy Couple, though they preferred it to be a clear and sunny day, the unexpected weather would have little to no effect on how ecstatic they were this day to have their La Costanera wedding. Michelle and Joseph, both very animated and carefree individuals, provided some awesome photo opportunities with their expressive personalities throughout the day. From the loud screams right after getting married, to the goofy cake cutting shenanigans, you could tell exactly why there are a perfect match for each other! One of the most memorable moments for me came when they made their grand entrance, donning gold chains and joining in the verbal ruckus that their friends and family provided. It was pure joy, and they quickly had their parents join in on their dancing celebration, sandwiching them and making it very unforgettable. The smiles on everyone’s faces just made me so happy to be present in this moment. Speaking of smiles, throughout the evening I would always see a smile or laugh on Michelle’s face, whether it was reacting to Joseph’s antics, or simply enjoying the big day with all her friends and family. Despite La Costanera being a smaller venue for a wedding, the intimate atmosphere was the perfect complement to everyone’s energy, helping to make this evening a grand celebration. With a shorter day to photograph at 5 hours, it was great that I was able to be present for the most important parts of the Couple’s La Costanera wedding, photographing the ceremony and reception and leaving right at the start of the dance party! And something tells me that the dance floor kept going off up until closing time! 😀 Venue : La CostaneraDJ : Colors and Music ProductionsFlorist : Florals by FlorMakeup : Brett BlackburnHair : Linda LealaoPlanner : Maria Arellano-Chan Interested In More Information? Alviso Adobe Park Wedding

Alviso Adobe Park Wedding Nicole and Victor held their outdoor Alviso Adobe Park wedding in Pleasanton, hoping to have a casual and intimate wedding with only 23 guests and focusing on the day and being with their special guests. This elopement was a very touching way to help them celebrate with the most important people in their lives. Unfortunately, several of their guests’ cars were broken into during the Ceremony, causing a big change in plans with timing and mood. Instead of doing some couples portraits at a second location before having their lunch reception nearby, we had to stay at the Park for the police. It was quite a drastic flip of emotions for them, albeit short-lived, as up until the realization of the crime they were such goofballs and smiling ear to ear! They decided to have a first look in front of everyone a minute before the actual ceremony, as a way of kicking things off in their own unique way. Instead of having a ring bearer, Victor carried around the chameleon from the Disney movie Tangled, which they have seen together many times and is one of their favorite movies. They wanted to do their wedding their own way, which helped it personally stand out in my memory and I’m sure I’m going to remember it for years to come, for all the right reasons. Elopements are always more intimate and more meaningful to the Couple, especially when you can customize the day to more or less however you want. Whether you want to elope at a Park like this Alviso Adobe Park wedding, or in the city such as San Francisco City Hall, the possibilities are endless. You can even have a backyard wedding for a more DIY feel with just the most important people in your lives. Regardless of location, the joy of the day is all that matters and being with the most important people in your lives. Interested In More Information? Lovers Point wedding photo with a bride and groom holding each other with their reflection in the water and a blue sky

Lovers Point Park Wedding – Melinda and Vern

Melinda and Vern’s outdoor Lovers Point Park wedding in Pacific Grove included their 6 combined children acting as bridesmaids and groomsmen, and niece and granddaughter serving as flower girls. Melinda and Vern were all smiles on this special family affair and along with about 100 of their closest friends and family were blessed with an unexpectedly sunny day after a strong storm swept the Bay Area the day before. Lovers Point Park was the perfect setting for their wedding ceremony allowing a scenic view of the ocean, and the clear skies served as a clean backdrop for their family and couples portraits, with the seagulls helping to add an authentic seaside feel to their images. Though I was only with them for a couple of hours, this wedding might be one of my more memorable events with the family involvement in the wedding, beautiful location and weather, and overall emotions captured. It just goes to show that beautiful moments happen all the time, and it is an honor to witness and capture them for my Couples. This Lovers Point Park wedding is a great example of an outdoor wedding ceremony and I highly recommend it for your small elopement as well! Stanford Memorial Church + Palo Alto Hills Country Club Wedding – Justin and Natalie

Stanford Memorial Church + Palo Alto Hills Country Club Wedding – Justin and Natalie Justin and Natalie began their Stanford Memorial Church and Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club wedding day at Stanford Memorial Church, having their religious ceremony before their larger reception. They chose September 8th, 2018 for its numerical significance in Chinese culture but having a wedding day that was very much untraditional. A first for me and a memorable part of this union was the fact that the entire bridal party, which consisted of Natalie’s cousins, all wore white dresses, foregoing  the traditional “rule” that the Bride should be the only one wearing white. Further breaking the traditional trend, the entire wedding party joined the Bride and Groom with matching casual footwear – Chuck Taylor All-Stars! I love it when Couples do things their way and don’t do thing simply because it is expected – that’s what makes them…them, after all! 🙂 Referring to their first date, Justin and Natalie provided Teaspoon boba drinks to welcome their guests upon arrival to the Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club for their wedding reception, as well as using Sugarfina gummy candy for table arrangements and favors. Boba and gummy candy – these were some lucky guests! And I was able to bring some gummy home too for what might be the best gummy bears I’ve ever had!  Tying into the theme of uniqueness it seems, Justin’s best man, Walter, ended the dinner reception by providing a speech and a gift to the guests as he surprised everyone with a gift card to Chick-Fil-A taped under everyone’s chair, referencing Justin’s love for the fast food chain. He tied in the fact that it is often difficult for the Couple to eat during their own wedding, so he even presented the Bride and Groom their own Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, which they happily combined with their post dinner snack of tacos later in the evening.  It was the perfect night for this awesome laid back Couple and I was so honored to share in their special day! From the untraditional wardrobe to the hilarious speeches and moments throughout the evening, I was constantly presented with unique moments to photograph and loved every part of it. I was as excited going over these images as I was eating the gummy bears (and that is saying a lot!) mountain terrace

The Mountain Terrace Wedding – Scarlett and Stephen

The Mountain Terrace Wedding – Scarlett and Stephen Steven and Scarlett’s Mountain Terrace wedding was held outdoors on a sunny fall afternoon in November, coming all the way from Hong Kong for their destination wedding in San Francisco. Scarlett loved the scenic backdrop of trees at the Mountain Terrace, a site rarely seen in Hong Kong, and Stephen was raised in the Bay Area, so it made sense for them to hold their wedding at this gorgeous venue. With friends and family flying in from all over the world, including a Couple whose wedding I photographed a few years ago (Kate and Ben wedding), they rented out a large Airbnb to get ready nearby and to hold their customary Chinese wedding games, which included a dance routine by the guys, as well as guessing Scarlett’s lips through a lipstick stained paper towel. After a goofy and laid-back morning at the house they set out for the venue to sneak in some couples portraits before the ceremony since they skipped taking engagement photos and wanted to focus on the natural beauty at the wedding venue. Knowing Scarlett loved the trees, I knew immediately where I wanted to place them for my “guaranteed laughter” direction I give 🙂  Easily one of my favorite photos of the day was influencing Scarlett to laugh so hard that she ended up hurting her stomach! 😀 If I could have every Bride and Groom enjoy themselves this much I would say I’ve done my job! There were no fancy tricks or special lighting for the photo, but to me “Moment” is the most important part of any photograph, and capturing the sheer joy in body language is the best reward! As a sign of their huge hearts, Scarlett and Stephen requested the officiant to start off the ceremony by giving time for the guests to turn around and meet someone new and introduce themselves. I think this is easily the best introduction to a Couple and wedding ceremony you can ever have, and it just goes to show what kind of people they are. After some equally funny and emotional vows at the ceremony, we kicked things into high gear during the cocktail hour and I got to really have fun (and let them be themselves). Since it was a relatively smaller sized guest count of 70, we ended up shooting formals of most everyone in attendance…but a normally mundane task proved to be quite amusing as the guests were almost as fun as the Couple, and the wild poses foreshadowed what the dance floor would be like! If you don’t believe me – scroll til the end! 😛 You know it is a good party is when the Bride is knocked out at the end of the day…and I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have it any other way.
